Grashoppers' Nature Explorers

Two of our activity days this summer enabled the children to get out and explore, the children really enjoyed  getting wet and muddy, discovering the wonders all around us!

On our first day, spent mainly in the stream in the Park, the children were all given plates with double sided tape to make 'memory plates' and they foraged throughout the day and found interesting things to make some lovely creations!

After time spent 'stream dipping' in which we found 2 frogs and a toad as well as countless freshwater shrimps,

the children hunted for hidden ducks (an activity from last year back by popular demand!)Then we had duck races, then found messages in bottles. The messages were dares written earlier by the children.

Who knew so much fun could be had with just a stream, plastic bottles, nets and ducks!

The second nature day was spent in woods and orchards. I found lots of simple resources for 'nature detectives' on the Woodland Trust website http://www.naturedetectives.org.uk/summer/start/.

In teams the children started by doing a colours in nature bingo and then went on to look for bugs and identify trees. We found most of the 13 trees in the wood where we were based for the morning and bug hunting became an obsession all day!

We built a fabulous den using just what we found in the woods and a large cargo net!

In the afternoon we were based in the COCO orchard, making good use of our membership - there was so much to do see and explore! www.overburyfarms.co.uk/2013/04/coco-treasure-hunt/?,

We had our own treasure hunt, 'The Dead Tree Treasure Hunt'again in teams but ultimately working together to find the treasure in the biggest dead tree (we did note all the hard work going on inthe orchard to replace the dead trees!)

We finished our day with more ducks and shrimps in the orchard stream - a day full of fun, learning about nature through exploration!
