A visit to the nurse

The children had a visit from Mandy the nurse in response to one of our children having visited the doctor's recently.

Nurse Mandy came to speak to the children and brought lots of things that you would find in a hospital. The children tried on the coats, looked at the stethoscope and talked about visiting the doctors or hospital.

We listened to our hearts beating through the stethoscope.

We checked our pulse with the pulse oximeter

We then set up our role play area as a doctors surgery with prescription pads, bandages etc for the children to explore and play with.

We had lots of lovely words used focusing on a visit to the  doctors and  hospital and lots of writing prescriptions and medical notes.

Learning about people who help us can often allay some of the fears children have about such things as visiting the dentist or hospital and it forms part of the early years foundation stage development matters curriculum. The development matters covers such things as shows an interest in different occupations and ways of life and remembers and talks about significant events in their own experience.  For more information click on the link to see the full document.
