Gareth told us all about the important role of a firefighter and the many ways firefighters help to keep us safe. He explained the different pieces of equipment they use, including a hose, pump, water tanks and a very tall ladder. We even learnt an amazing fact – if a fire engine runs out of water, firefighters can use the pump to draw water from places such as swimming pools!
Gareth also shared some photographs of himself at work, including rescuing a variety of animals and coming out of a burning building. The children loved hearing about his experiences.
Next, Gareth showed us the protective clothing firefighters wear to keep themselves safe. Some of the children were lucky enough to try on the uniform, and they all agreed that it was very warm and heavy. Even Tessa had a turn wearing it!
To finish, Gareth talked to us about the importance of having smoke detectors in our homes and reminded us that they should be tested every month to make sure they are working properly.
Before he left, Gareth asked us all to make two promises: to remind our grown-ups to test the smoke alarms every month and to always give firefighters a wave whenever we see a fire engine. We were very happy to make that promise!
