Martin told us about his job and showed us the uniform he wears while at work. Some of the children had the opportunity to try on his high-visibility jacket and protective helmet. We discussed why paramedics wear special clothing to keep themselves safe while caring for others.
Martin then introduced us to some of the equipment he uses every day. The children learned how a stethoscope is used to listen to a person's heartbeat and breathing, and they were delighted when Martin kindly donated some stethoscopes to our nursery so we can continue exploring and learning through play.
We also saw a portable ECG machine, which helps paramedics monitor how the heart is working. The children watched with great interest as Martin demonstrated how to measure blood pressure and showed us how a pulse oximeter is used to check oxygen levels by testing it on one of the children.
The highlight of the visit was seeing the NRU ambulance parked outside the nursery. The children were excited to climb inside, explore the vehicle and discover some of the equipment carried on board to help patients.
To end the visit, everyone listened carefully as the ambulance sirens were switched on. There were lots of smiles—and a few little hands covering ears—as the children discovered just how loud they are! We talked about why emergency vehicles use sirens and how they help other road users know to move safely out of the way.
