Guy explained how the SARA team helps people who get into difficulty on rivers and other waterways. They showed us the special clothing they wear to keep themselves safe, including a wetsuit, life jacket and protective helmet. Some of the children were lucky enough to try on the life jacket and helmet, and they quickly discovered just how important this protective equipment is.
Guy also taught us some very important water safety rules. We learned that we should always be with a grown-up or another trusted person when we are near water. If we ever fall into the water, we should shout loudly for help and try to float on our backs in a starfish position until someone can rescue us. The children have brought home a leaflet to share with parents about how to stay safe around water.
Next, we went outside to explore the SARA rescue boat. The children were very excited to climb aboard and look around inside. We discovered some of the equipment the rescue team uses, including powerful flashlights and handheld radios, which help the crew communicate and stay safe while carrying out rescues.
A huge thank you to Guy for taking the time to visit us, share his knowledge and teach us such valuable water safety lessons. We all had a fantastic time and learned so much!
