St David's Day

This week the Grasshoppers children have been learning about St David's Day and exploring why it is such a special celebration in Wales.

We have talked about who St David was and how people celebrate on the 1st of March by wearing daffodils and taking part in traditional activities.

We have been for walks around the village and gardens looking at all of the beautiful daffodils that have bloomed alongside other spring flowers. The children were very excited to spot the bright yellow petals and notice the signs that spring is on its way. We used this opportunity to talk about the changing seasons and how theflowers have started to grow and the trees will start to get leaves back on their branches.

The children have been very creative using paint and playdough to create their very own daffodils, the colourful pictures have been proudly displayed around the nursery to add a lovely pop of colour. They explored different shades of yellow and green and practised their fine motor skills while carefully using brushes and sponges. The nursery is now looking wonderfully bright and cheerful!

For the last couple of weeks, the Squirrel group have been learning a new Welsh song called Clap clap un dau tri. The children have really enjoyed learning how to count in Welsh and practising the actions that go along with the words. They have been singing this each day before snack with their friends. Please click on the link to practise the song together at home.

On Friday we will have a special menu change to continue our celebrations. For snack, the children will be trying traditional Welsh cakes alongside some fresh fruit. For lunch, we will be serving a very yummy shepherd's pie. Then for tea, the children will take part in a cooking activity where they will use our safety knives to develop their cutting skills to carefully chop potatoes and leeks to make a delicious leek and potato soup.
